World famous in the southern lakes area, Mavora Lakes is sure to impress even the most intrepid traveller. Leaving from Te Anau, we will embark on an epic journey to the Mavora Lakes area and back to Te Anau in time for lunch. On our way to Mavora we will travel through a remote farming station nestled in a valley in the Eyre Mountains. There will be plenty of wildlife and frequently we will drive through a flock of sheep moving down the road. Once we arrive at Mavora you will see a popular ‘Lord of the Rings’ film location, stop at the Kiwi Burn swing bridge, then continue along a little known 4WD track through native Beech forest and up through the open country to the northern end of Mavora Lakes. Learn about the rich history of the area with your local guide and discover a local secret usually only seen by those with a capable 4WD vehicle.
We will be driving the famous Wild Rides ‘Wilder Beast’ comfortable 4WD vehicle. There will be plenty of water crossings and we will even spend time driving through the lake itself. A true off-road experience in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful areas.
Stop for a snack in the wilderness at Carey’s Hut where the only other people you may see are explorers walking some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and world famous walks. Afterwards, sit by the edge of the lake listening to birdsong, take a short walk to admire the breath-taking scenery, or even jump in the lake for a swim. With plenty of photo opportunities, the Mavora Lakes 4WD half day trip is sure to leave you with a smile from ear to ear at the end of the day.
